Google searches based on keywords deliver results. Where your business ranks in those results is determined by your SEO, or search engine optimization. Your website Is the place where you focus on SEO. Content drives SEO. Google combs through the content on your website, so it is important to have good quality content with keywords that describe your products and services on every page of your website, especially your home page.
Google ranking systems are designed to comb through billions of website pages to deliver results to you based on the words you use in in your query. To do this efficiently, Google uses a series of algorithms. These Search Algorithms look at many factors, including the words in your query, relevance and usability of website pages, expertise of sources listed on the sites, and even your geographic location. Keeping your content fresh and your website populated with good content helps with the algorithms that deliver your business in the search results.

There is a lot of attention paid today to the “User Experience.” It’s all about making a website user-friendly, easy to navigate, easy to find information, and designed to engage the visitor (user) with your content.
Have you ever gone to a website and clicked on highlighted words or links or icons and nothing happened? Have you tried to find the location of the business or a phone number and had to go page after page searching and searching for it? How long did you search before you gave up went to a competitor’s site to find what you need? Do not create this kind of frustration for prospective clients visiting your website. Make their “user experience” pleasant and easy.
Objectively review your website (or get an objective opinion from the outside), to honestly answer these questions:
- Is it easy to navigate your website, find information, and contact you?
- Can you easily find out where your offices are?
- Do all of the links on your site work and take you to the proper page when clicked?
- Does its format change to accommodate a cell phone?
- Do you have a “Call Me” button that the visitor can press to instantly contact you?
- Is there helpful information and content and resources on your website?
- If you have a newsletter, does every page have a link for the visitor to sign up for it?
Paying a website designer for a review and deliver a report on how well your website functions is well worth the minimal cost. They use subscription based software programs you would not be skilled in using to show you How many pages you have in your site; how much content you have on each page, and if it is enough to drive SEO; if you have broken links on your site; if your site takes too long to load, which will cause visitors to jump off before they even see your home page; how it ranks with keywords and SEO; an analysis of backlinks on your site (more on this below); and more. They can run an analysis of competitive sites, too, to show you how your company website performs.
Understanding your businesses position in the marketplace and defining your ideal client is your starting point. Assessing and maximizing your internet visibility with SEO, messaging appropriately for your target audiences across social media, gathering testimonials and reviews from clients, and using video to inform and sell to all come together in a good marketing plan.
Another way to boost SEO for your website is to add links to other sites on the pages of your website. This is referred to as “backlinks,” mentioned above. For example, if you are a member of a Chamber of Commerce, you may want to have a resources page on your website, where you list that organization and provide the URL (website address), so someone can easily click on it and jump to that website. Google likes that kind of cross website activity and tends to rank you higher when you have that in place on your website.
TIP: Add a list of resources on your website of organizations in which you have membership with links to their websites.
